FIELD & STREAM NEWSLETTERS

Sitting in a useless quiet auditorium, I listened in awe as one of many finalists wrapped up his final calling sequence on stage. As quickly as he was performed, Rob Kinney, a Mossy Oak photographer, leaned over and requested me, “Properly, what do you assume?”

“I feel these guys are making me actually insecure about my turkey calling.” I responded, laughing.

This was no run-at-the-mill calling competitors. This was the Grand Nationwide Turkey Calling Championship, held yearly on the NWTF conference in Nashville—and it was my first time seeing these guys compete in individual. Solely one of the best of one of the best take the stage right here. These guys are usually not hobbyists. They’re craftsmen, obsessives. The finalist that we’d simply heard, was Josh Grossenbacher, who, with out having a greater approach to put it, may sound extra like a turkey than an precise turkey. Closing your eyes and listening to Josh name on stage is the closest factor attainable to being teleported to the turkey woods on a crisp spring morning when the turkeys are speaking. Little did I do know, six weeks later I’d be sharing a tree with Josh, watching three longbeards fly down off the limb proper to our toes.

Texas Turkey Camp

Two months later, I arrive at Mossy’s Oak’s Texas turkey camp, aptly named the Rio Roundup, and instantly see 4 turkeys stroll by as we entered the driveway. That is going to be good, I feel to myself. I’m coming to camp with a pre-existing appreciation for Rio Grande turkeys, as all of our turkeys in my dwelling state of California are Rios. I’m no stranger to this subspecies. However whereas our birds are related, I might already inform that one thing was completely different about this place.

Exterior the entrance door of the camp, there’s a steel sculpture of a canine holding a shotgun, carrying a pair of customized snake gaiters sewn out of Mossy Oak Obsession cloth, and holding an indication that reads “If you happen to’re not God or George Strait, take your boots off.” A full-size flying gobbler mount graces the wall as quickly as you stroll in. On one other wall, there’s a map, with a ’90s movie photograph pinned over it of Tom Kelly with Toxey Haas and pals, standing shoulder to shoulder with turkeys fanned out in entrance of them. The camp property has that feeling sure locations get when sufficient tales have been informed there. A sense that doesn’t get created in a single day; one that you just definitely can’t faux. It had all of the makings of a spot that has turkey looking lore coursing via its existence.

Figuring out I used to be about to go hunt with Josh, I contemplated simply leaving all my calls at dwelling once we went out. Attempting to set free a collection of yelps round Josh could be like sitting behind a drift boat whereas floating down the Madison in Montana, and pushing your information out of the way in which, grabbing the oars, spitting your dip in his spitter, after which pretending you know the way to row. I wasn’t going to be that man. However he inspired me to name anyway, as a result of he’s like that.

The plan was to go after some gobblers that Josh had been anticipating just a few days prior, and I used to be ready to listen to Josh work these turkeys into vary. It seems, his woodsmanship is nearly as good as his calling, as we snuck proper into their bed room underneath 75 yards from their roost, and the turkeys flew off the limb and proper to us with no single name. 5 minutes later, they had been strutting and drumming their approach to us till I had an ideal shot at 22 yards. I might hear Josh whisper: “Take a deep breath, put it proper on the bottom of the neck. Good and simple.”

My shot went off. Then got here a few minute of silence, after the birds all vanished. I then proceeded to have Josh examine me to Cleveland Browns operating again Earnest Byner—who, in 1988, fumbled the ball on the 1-yard line whereas heading for a game-tying landing within the AFC championship recreation, sealing a 38-31 loss for the Browns. I completely deserved it. We each had amusing.

About an hour later, I had redemption on a distinct chook. We ended up putting up a variety of different birds over the course of some days, and sealed the deal on just a few. Josh took a chook that had a triple beard, and for somebody who’s seen the present as many instances as him, it was unbelievable to see him shaking with pleasure as if it had been the primary time one got here in on a string for him yet again. Seeing that gave me hope that it’s going to nonetheless really feel the identical means after I see a turkey stroll in for the 2 hundredth time.

Dwelling Away from Dwelling

On the ultimate day, Neill Haas led us to a brand new spot, and we had barely sat down and regarded up, when there have been already three longbeards operating in our path. Neill shortly acquired their consideration, and inside seconds we had a chook in our lap. Again at camp, I heard tales of all types, of turkeys performing right here in Texas how you want they’d act again dwelling. Turkeys hardly ever learn the script. However right here in Texas, your odds appear to be higher at them doing so.

Mossy Oak’s Rio Roundup started as only a small tight knit group of pals—the unique staff of the model—happening to Texas collectively, greater than 30 years in the past. I wish to consider that the primary time that they found the standard of turkey looking down in Texas, it felt to them as in the event that they’d found a spot that no person knew about in addition to the native ranchers. Like they’d stumbled into some secret nation nonetheless untouched by hunters. Jaw dropping numbers of turkeys, and wild issues behaving the way in which you at all times hoped they might. These turkeys in Texas again then had in all probability seldom heard a turkey name, not to mention one from the vest of a seasoned southern turkey hunter. Individuals weren’t touring to hunt turkeys again within the early ’90s. There have been no 49-state slams or turkey-season van excursions on social media. It was only a group of die-hard turkey hunters that stumbled upon a goldmine of unbothered turkeys, and developed a love for an unfamiliar place. They usually cherished it a lot, they saved going again.

And that kid-in-a-candy-shop pleasure—to be there, to be in a spot as particular as the center of absolute nowhere in west Texas, enjoying chess amongst the mesquite timber, the cedars, the rattlesnakes and the cactus, with a wholesome inhabitants of Rios—stays there at camp in the present day. As a turkey hunter, it’s unattainable to not be enthusiastic about being there with the sheer variety of turkeys which might be round.

Sitting across the pavilion on the final evening of camp, I requested Daniel and Neill Haas a really straight ahead query. Why do you guys preserve coming again?

Their reply was easy: “That is our dwelling away from dwelling”.

And that’s after I began to get it. Texas turkey camp for the Mossy Oak household is that once-a-year consolation meals. It’s acquainted, dependable, and it’s at all times gonna be there if you want it. It’s what they’ve performed for many years, and it’s as part of them as every other turkey camp is—even when it’s just one, fleeting, 5-day journey down there every year. It’s a change of surroundings, and a overseas but acquainted place—however at this level, it’s a spot that’s a part of their inside wiring of what turkey season is. If you happen to’re having a tricky season again dwelling, don’t fear. While you get to Texas, chances are you’ll be dodging cactus spines and stepping over rattlesnakes. You might sweat just a little greater than you’re used to. However ultimately, someplace throughout the infinite nation, one will hammer. He’ll. And when he does, for a second, every little thing is true on the planet, and it’s arduous to cease the nostalgic feeling of being there from taking on. Even when it’s your first time there, you may really feel it within the air.
