Florida Takes Major Step Toward State Management of Red Snapper

Alexandria, VA – November 10, 2025 – Immediately, Governor Ron DeSantis hosted a press convention in Fernandina Seaside, FL, to announce Florida’s plan to take over administration of crimson snapper off the state’s Atlantic Coast. The Governor, alongside Roger Younger, the Government Director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fee (FWC), despatched a request to the Secretary of Commerce to implement an Exempted Fishing Allow (EFP).

The EFP requires a 39-day leisure fishing season for crimson snapper within the South Atlantic for Florida anglers. The season can be divided into two segments – the primary to run from Memorial Day weekend (Could 22) by June 20, and the second over the course of a number of three-day weekends in October (Oct. 2–4, 9–11, and 16–18).

“The American Sportfishing Affiliation (ASA) applauds the Governor and FWC for taking this momentous step towards offering cheap entry to South Atlantic crimson snapper whereas selling conservation and supporting our state’s $11.1 billion leisure fishing trade,” stated Martha Guyas, Southeast Fisheries Coverage Director for ASA. “We’ve witnessed the advantages of state administration within the Gulf for years and we’re hopeful anglers and the trade will now expertise these identical advantages within the Atlantic for 2026 and past.”

The proposed 39-day season matches the preliminary season within the Gulf when Florida took over administration in 2018. In 2025, the Gulf leisure crimson snapper season is open 126 days, a testomony to the state’s potential to handle entry and conservation targets in tandem.

There are extra crimson snapper within the South Atlantic now than any time in current historical past, a reality agreed on by anglers, the trade and fisheries managers. Sadly, the sacrifices made by the leisure fishing neighborhood to rebuild the inventory so far haven’t been met with reciprocal entry to the fishery. In 2025, NOAA allowed a meager 2-day leisure crimson snapper season, and solely a single day in 2024.

The restricted season is essentially as a result of flawed estimates of leisure discards from the Marine Leisure Data Program, the device NOAA makes use of to conduct inventory assessments, which even the company acknowledges overestimates fishing effort by 30-40%. To deal with this problem, the EFP will present essential knowledge in regards to the crimson snapper inventory that can be utilized to tell future leisure fishing seasons.

ASA is optimistic this proposal can be met warmly by the Trump administration and the Secretary of Commerce, who oversees NOAA, and that it is going to be applied in brief order. The opposite South Atlantic states are submitting related requests.

“We’re grateful for Governor DeSantis’s management on this problem and to the Florida Congressional delegation, significantly Representatives Rutherford and Soto, in addition to Senator Scott, for his or her unwavering help in Washington, D.C.,” added Guyas.
